Preparation:

No special preparation.

Procedure In Blood:

Collect 3 to 5ml blood samples in the Green top tube because the Green top tube contains lithium heparin. Centrifuge the blood sample and separate the serum. Plasma or serum is used for test on an advanced analyzer.

Procedure In Urine:

Collect the 3 to 5ml urine into the urine container and send it to the laboratory for further analysis by using a strip of urine.

Results:

Results range from normal to abnormal.

Normal Results:

Normal results for this test are 135 to 145 mEq/L Different laboratories use different values for “normal”.

Abnormally low level:

An abnormally low level of blood sodium level lower than 135 mEq/L is called hyponatremia It may have Symptoms:

  • Fatigue
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Headache
