Oral Glucose Tolerance Test, The glucose tolerance test is on medical test in which glucose is given and blood samples are taken. After ward to determine how quickly it is cleaved from the blood. OGTT is only indicated in the following Conditions.
The patient is having symptoms suggestive of diabetes mellites, But fasting blood Sugar value is inconclusive (between 110-126 mg/dl). During pregnancy, excessive weight gain is noticed with a full history of big babies (more than 4 kg) or a partial history of miscarriage. To rule out begin renal glucosuria (Mutation In SLC 5 A2 Gene).
Function OF OGTT:
The glucose tolerance test, also known as the oral glucose tolerance test, measures your body’s response to sugar (glucose). OGTT is much shorter requiring only three glucose measurements to be drawn over a glucose measurement to be drawn over.
Diagnose:
The oral glucose tolerance test can diagnose type 1 diabetes. pregnancy-related pregnancy-related diabetes (gestational diabetes) and high blood sugar levels that put someone at risk for type 2 diabetes (prediabetes) Reactive Hypoglycemia.
- A two-hour oral glucose tolerance Test
- A three-hour oral glucose tolerance Test
Symptoms Of Oral Glucose Tolerance (OGTT):
- Feeling very thirsty.
- Dry mouth.
- Extreme tiredness.
- Blurred vision.
- Frequent need to urinate.
- Loss of muscle mass.
Causes of High OGTT:
- High Blood glucose level (Hyperglycemia) Diabetes
- Pancreas a gland
When is OGTT done:
Most pregnant women have a glucose screening test between 24 and 28 weeks of pregnancy.
Symptoms OF OGTT:
- Feel nauseated
- Sweaty lightheaded
- Short breath or fainting after drinking the glucose
How to perform the Test:
Blood samples are needed, During fast conditions.
Requirement:
- Glaxo’s-D Box
- Time/watch, Weight Machine
- Water and Glass
Procedure:
- A fasting blood sample is obtained with a urine sample. Recommended 75g glucose loaded for adults and 1.75g/kg body weight up to a maximum of 75 grams glucose for children. Glucose is mined in water (75 grams/100 ml) and the patient should drink it within 5 min.
- The second blood sample is taken after one hour with Urine Sample.
- 3rd Sample is taken after the completion of 2 hours with a urine sample.
- A 2-hour oral glucose fullerene test is needed for the diagnosis of reactive hypoglycemia, and 3 hours in pregnant women.
