Creatinine Blood Test measures the level of creatinine in your blood. Creatinine is a waste material that is made using your muscles. Your kidney filters creatinine from your blood and sends it out of the body in urine. A Creatinine Blood Test is done to see how well your kidneys are working. Each kidney has millions of filter units called nephrons.
Patients whose kidneys die can’t through out this material. Creatinine is one of the substances that your kidneys normally eliminate from the body. Doctors measure the level of creatinine in the blood to check kidney function tests (KFT) or Renal Function tests (RFTs).
High levels of creatinine may indicate that your kidney is damaged and not working properly.
How The Test Performed
A Blood sample is needed, and a Urine sample
Why The Test Performed
Creatinine is a waste product that is made by using your muscles. This test is done to see if your kidney works very well. If you have problems with the kidney, High blood pressure, swelling of the face, or swelling foot then your doctor advised a Renal function test or serum creatinine test.
Why Need This Test
If Your kidneys are not working well, screen for kidney disease if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or other conditions that increase the risk of kidney disease or if you have symptoms,
vomiting
swelling wrists, ankles, or abdomen
fatigue
a loss of appetite
swelling in the face,
lower back pain near the kidneys
changes in urine output
high blood pressure
nausea
decreased appetite
frequent and painful urination
Bloody urine
What Are The Risk
The creatinine test is safe. Risks are usually minor and can include:
Bleeding
Bruising
Infection
Slight pain when the needle is inserted
Fainting or feeling dizzy
What Does the Result Mean
The normal level of creatinine depends on how much muscle mass you have. The normal level for a man is higher than it is for a woman. Children have lower levels than both men and women. Creatinine is measured in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL). Here are the normal values by gender:
0.7 to 1.3 mg/dL for adult males
0.5 to 1.1 mg/dL for adult females
If your creatinine is high, it may mean you have:
Kidney disease
Blockage in your urinary system
Muscle disease
Congestive heart failure
Diabetes
Dehydration
Overactive thyroid gland
Shock
If your creatinine is low, it may mean you have:
Muscle loss
Severe liver disease
Not enough protein in your diet
