Cardiolipin Antibodies
Cardiolipin Antibodies are a type of fat or phospholipid important for blood clotting, present in platelets and cell membranes of cells in the blood. It helps to investigate inappropriate blood clot formation, to help determine the cause, of recurrent miscarriage, as a painting of an evaluation for antiphospholipid syndrome. Cardiolipin antibodies. are also associated with thrombocytopenia, recurrent miscarriage (especially 2nd, and 3rd trimesters) with premature labor, and pre-eclampsia. Autoantibodies are produced against Cardiolipin by our immune system mistakenly and cause abnormal blood clotting.
Types:
- IgG
- IgM
- IgA
Causes:
- Excessive blood clot formation
- Thrombosis
- Abnormal blood clotting
- Miscarriages
- Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.
- Thrombocytopenia
- Pre- Eclampsia
- Epilepsy
- Chorea
- Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome (APS) most commonly SLE.
Other Names:
It is also called the Anticardiolipin Antibodies Test.
Diagnostic Importance of Cardiolipin:
- It helps cause abnormal blood clotting or Thrombosis.
- To help diagnose the cause of recurrent Miscarriages.
- To diagnose Anti phospholipid Antibody syndrome and systemic Lupus Erythematosus.
Normal Range:
- IgG Less than 15 GPL Units
- IgM Less than 12 MPL Unit
- IgA Less than 12 APL Units
How To Perform The Test:
Procedure:
- Collect 3 to 5ml blood samples in Red Top Tube or Gel Tube.
- Centrifuge the blood Sample.
- After centrifugation, the serum and further tests are performed and run on Elisa or any other advanced Analyzer.
- And check the antibody Level.
Result Interpretation:
If you are negative for cardiolipin antibodies, that is normal. If you are positive, you might have cardiolipin antibodies Syndrome.
