RBC Count is a blood test that measures the number of RBCs in your blood. The average age of a normal red blood cell is 120 days. Red blood cells do not have a nucleus. Cell size 8 microns. Red blood cells carry oxygen from the lungs to every part of the body. Your cells need oxygen to grow, reproduce, and stay healthy.
An RBC count that is higher or lower than normal is often the first sign of an illness. The amount of oxygen that’s delivered to your body’s tissues depends on the number of red blood cells you have and how well they work. A Red Cell count is usually carried out as part of a complete blood cell (CBC).

You need this test if you have symptoms of low or high red cell count, Symptoms included,
Low Red Cell Count Symptoms are,
- Pale Skin
- Fatigue
- Weakness
- Fever
High Red Cell Count Symptoms are,
- Vision Problem
- Headache
- Stomach Pain
- Illness
Results:
Women usually have a lower RBC than men, and the level of red blood cells tends to decrease with age.
A normal RBC count would be around:
- men – 4.0 to 5.9 x 10*12/L
- women – 3.8 to 5.2 x 10*12/L
Low RBC count also indicates a (vitamin B6), B12, or folate deficiency. It may also sign of
- Internal bleeding
- Kidney disease
- Anemia
- Leukemia
- A Cancer of Bone marrow
A High RBC count is caused by several health conditions or health-related factors, including:
- smoking
- congenital heart disease
- dehydration
- low blood oxygen levels
- pulmonary fibrosis
